many people have been arrested in connection with a violent clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the Island of Lagos, at the weekend.
About five people were reportedly, on Saturday and Sunday, killed as supporters of the two parties battled for what seems to be the control of the Island of Lagos
The Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that the weekend clash might not be unconnected with the crisis between the youth who were all formerly supporting the same party.
A resident of Isale Eko, where the incident took place told the Nigerian Tribune that “ they were all supporting the same party before but now some of them have crossed to the PDP “
It was gathered the crisis started on Saturday evening, when some youths, suspected to have been mobilised for the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state were returning to the island
It was further gathered that the youth, who were shouting and singing on the return to the Island, took to the streets jubilating
A clash reportedly ensued between them and members of the opposing party on the island and one person, said to be a member of the APC, was reportedly killed in the process
In what appeared to be a reprisal attack, members of the other group mobilised on Sunday and stormed the Isale Eko base of the rival groups and a free-for-all, in which dangerous weapons were used, ensued.
Five people, said to be members of the opposing group, were reportedly killed in the reprisal attack which caused serious panic
The image maker in charge of the state police command , Ngozi Braide, while speaking on the incident, said “many people have been arrested in connection with the incident and arms and ammunition were recovered from them.”
The Lagos police image maker also said the arrested suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti for further investigations.
