African champions, Super Eagles yesterday relatively got their campaign for a ticket to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco back on track with a 3-1 win over Sudan at the National Stadium, Abuja.
The victory gave the Coach Stephen Keshi tutored squad who were on the brink of elimination following last weekend’s 1-0 loss in Sudan four points but with their remaining matches must win. The two games are against Congo and South Africa respectively; and they must win them to ensure a place in Morocco in 2015.
Former Kano Pillars man, Ahmed Musa gave Nigeria a lead in the 51st minute after a scoreless first half. The visitors responded almost immediately, drawing level through star striker, Salah Ibrahim to the disappointment of the home fans. Not happy with the equaliser by Sudan, the home fans who were shouting slogan of ‘Keshi Must Go!’ began to boo Nigerian players and the Coach in particular before new boy, Aaron Samuel restored hope for Nigeria through a lead before birthday boy, Ahmed Musa netted his second goal to put the score beyond reach of the Sudanese.Keshi made four changes to the team that lost 1-0 in Sudan with Reading midfielder Hope Akpan, China-based striker Aaron Samuel, Raheem Lawal, and Juwon Oshaniwa all starting the game. Both preferred fullbacks Efe Ambrose and Elderson Echiejile were dropped with Ogenyi Onazi playing in the right back for the first time.
Despite the victory, Keshi was roundly booed and jeered by the Abuja who thronged into the stadium to watch the Eagles fans.
The angry fans who started with the booing before the start of the match to register their displeasure mobilised themselves and pressured the country’s football authorities to do what they say is needful; which is to get a suitable replacement for the Big
